Digital Nomad Life - Part 2 - Making Connections

When you think of a digital nomad working, what comes to your mind? Probably something like this:

And sometimes that is what it looks like. Well, maybe with a more comfortable place to sit. One thing about this picture that is familiar to most digital nomads is the isolation. You are in a different country, often one where you do not speak the dominant language, and all your old friends and family are thousands of miles away. So how do you go about making connections?

One way is by making use of coworking space. You know, those businesses that let you rent a desk or an office and use their wi-fi. The people you meet there will often be like-minded entrepreneurs. And they often have amenities which lend themselves to making friends.

Another way to meet people is through social media. Facebook has groups in many areas dedicated to “expats”. We have made many contacts through such groups, and again, you often meet like minded people. Those who are willing to leave the country of their birth behind in search of something better often share an adventurous quality, and love to share what they have learned. These groups often arrange for meetups at locals restaurants where you can meet face to face.

Just don’t let your whole world be work. Sometimes, especially when things are going well and work is flowing in, it is easy to get lost in making money. And sometimes that is necessary. But especially if you are far from home, get out and enjoy your new, perhaps temporary, surroundings. And take time to meet people. Because otherwise the only benefit you will get is cheaper rent, and that would be missing out on what makes travel so special.
