Have you ever tried living abroad? (Part 1)

For years we would visit Mexico on vacation, and loved it. What’s not to love - at a resort, enjoying the included food and drink, swimming, diving, laying in the sun.

Living abroad is a whole different animal though. Unless you have the means to live at an all-inclusive resort, living full time (or even half the time as a snowbird) is an entirely different animal. For the past couple of winters we have done the snowbird thing - fleeing winter by heading south.

There are some challenges - many challenges, in fact. But there are also reasons why many come back, year after year, or just stay. I like to try and give useful suggestions on this blog, and so I will be posting some of the most helpful hints that we have figured out. This is going to be a series of blog posts- there might be posts on other topics coming soon as well, but this series is top of mind right now.

One incredibly useful website for any considering moving to Mexico is Expats in Mexico. It contains so much information, and some really good blogs on the subject, by some very experienced people. I’m definitely not going to try and compete with them, but I may have my own insights. When it comes to living abroad, everyone wants different things. Some wants almost rise to the level of a need. This stuff is good to think about before you are in the foreign country.

I may also touch on some strange peripheral thoughts; things such as the psychology of spending a different currency than your own, and what technology to bring.

Hopefully it will be helpful to some. Maybe you will realize that the expat or snowbird life isn’t for you. Or maybe you will think that yes, you can do it.

There are a lot of great places in this world to live. Some homes don’t look like much from the outside, but inside are exactly what you need.
