Hi. Hola. Terve.Yassou.

Want ideas for travel? Cheap guides to ensure the best cruise stop? Some pretty pictures?

You’ve come to the right place.

St. Maarten / St. Martin - two countries, one small island

St. Maarten / St. Martin - two countries, one small island

Officially the Dutch half of the island is known as “Sint Maarten.” It is easy to see why countries in Northern Europe would want their territory to include an island like this! Stump your friends by asking them if France borders the Netherlands. It does on this island!

One of the most famous spots is Maho beach, where tourists can get a photo of a plane skimming over the beach. We found this to be a good island to catch our breath during a busy cruise, and explore the area near the cruise port on foot. Friends spent the day roasting on the beach. If you are looking to relax, include a stop in St. Maarten. For some specific recommendations - see the guide.

Shopping—St. Maarten/ St. Martin is advertised on most cruise ships as a shopping destination, and there certainly is a lot of shopping. Take the short ferry ride to the shopping district, and you can fill your time in many stores, if that is your goal.

Lunch in the Boardwalk area—

Lazy Lizard Beach Bar (what you would expect from a place with this name, but good)

Nazca Peruvian (closed Fridays).

Dan’s Chocolate Factory. Lunch and chocolate martinis

St. Maarten is a great port to explore on foot.

Some of the cruises which visit this area are very port-heavy. If you are looking for a lighter day—start at a beach, then when the crowds have lessened, do a little shopping.

Be a little wary when shopping. That $1,000 purse on sale for $100—probably a knock off. On the other hand, they had some really nice tropical shirts. And I almost bought a drone. ;)

Or visit The Yoda Guy. Seriously.
