Dominica - A Tropical Rain forest on a Volcanic Island

The Island of Dominica was hit hard by Hurricane Maria, but it is getting back on its feet. Even with the damage, it is still well worth visiting. Most of what was ruined are things people have built, the natural beauty remains intact.

This is an island which is best seen up close. When you arrive at a landmark waterfall or scenic lookout, be wearing comfortable shoes. Dominica rewards explorers with sites and vistas that are worth the effort. Try as a photographer might, they won’t be able to capture the beauty of this place.

But there is so much more to Dominica than just its beauty. A good tour guide will show you the diversity of plant life; it seems that every square inch of the island is alive! They can show you the recovery efforts underway, and the progress being made. While some of the most famous sites are not what they once were, there is more than enough here to make it worth the effort.

Trafalgar Falls—in theory, this is a short walk to a scenic lookout. For the nimble—go past the lookout and explore. The footing is uneven—don’t attempt if you are unsteady or made a poor shoe choice. But there is so much to see. This would also be a good spot for drone pilots!

Boiling Lake—for the hard-core hikers. The water isn’t actually boiling, but close. Very unusual formation, but only for advanced hikers. Get a guide for the hike.

Wotten Waven—Dominica is a volcanic island, with Sulphur springs. The area called Wotten Waven (near Trafalgar Falls) is home to hot spring fed Sulphur baths.

Dominica Botanic Gardens—for nature lovers, well worth a visit.
